Hubei Road Lane 203 was once a well-known “hotel alley” in Shanghai and a venue for the covert activities of underground Chinese Communist Party members during the 1920s and 1930s. In particular, the Mengyuan Hotel, Xinshu Hotel, and nearby sites such as the former location of the Sixth National Congress of the CPC and the Commercial Press distribution center once bore the traces of work and life of veteran proletarian revolutionaries including Zhou Enlai, Deng Xiaoping, Chen Yun, Li Lisan, Li Weihan, Ren Bishi, Li Fuchun, and Chen Yi. In 1996, the Jinling East Road Street Patriotic Education Garden was established within Hubei Road Lane 203, showcasing over 20 photos that highlight key historical events and activities in the Jinling area. In 2000, the garden was relocated to Lane 614, Fuzhou Road. It is open to the public free of charge.
