Mao Liying, from Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, joined the Communist Party in Shanghai in 1938 and once served as the chairwoman of the Shanghai Chinese Women’s Professional Club. She was an outstanding leader of the women’s movement in Shanghai during the 1930s. On December 12, 1939, while organizing charity performances, sales, winter clothing donations, and fundraising activities to support the New Fourth Army’s resistance against Japan, she was assassinated by Wang Jingwei regime agents in the alley next to the side entrance of the Shanghai Chinese Women’s Professional Club at No. 120, Nanjing Road, inside the Cichang Building. She was only 29 years old at the time of her death. On December 12, 1989, the site where martyr Mao Liying was killed was designated as a district-level revolutionary memorial site.
