Shanghai Public Stadium, also known as Shanghai South Stadium (now the Shanghai South Sports Activity Center), is the city’s earliest public stadium and the first sports facility built and managed by the Chinese themselves. Completed in 1917, it was a frequent site for mass gatherings of workers, students, and citizens protesting imperialism and feudalism from the May Fourth Movement to the outbreak of the Battle of Shanghai in 1937, giving it a proud revolutionary history. Free admission is available by appointment for the public.
