On May 12, 1949, the Third Field Army of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, under the command of Chen Yi and Su Yu, launched the Battle of Shanghai with overwhelming force. By May 25, the southern part of Shanghai across the Suzhou River had been liberated. To welcome the Liberation Army and celebrate the liberation of Shanghai, underground Party members of the Wing On Department Store (now Hualian Commercial Building) on Nanjing Road hastily made a brightly colored red flag. Braving great danger, they climbed to the highest point of the building and hoisted the flag atop Qiyun Pavilion, making it the first red flag to be raised on Nanjing Road during the liberation of Shanghai.

A nearly 30-square-meter exhibition hall has been set up at Qiyun Pavilion in Hualian Commercial Building, displaying the history of the founding of Wing On Department Store and the history of the struggles of its underground Party members. It is open to the public free of charge.
