Former Site of the Central Committee’s Secret Printing House

The Former Site of the Central Committee’s Secret Printing House is a Shanghai Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Unit and a patriotic education base.

The former site of the printing house is now located at No. 99 Xinchang Road (within Xinchang Residential Compound). In early 1930, Comrade Mao Zemin, manager (minister) of the Publication and Distribution Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, established the secret printing house here. Its main functions were to reprint documents and articles from the Soviet areas, print leaflets about the political situation and class struggle, and also produce publications such as "Party Construction," "Red Flag Weekly," "Bolshevik," and "Truth." This continued until the summer of 1932. At that time, the second floor of the site served as living quarters, the third floor as the printing and binding workshop, and the ground floor housed a tobacco and paper shop. Qian Zhiguang, the person in charge of the printing house, used his identity as the shop owner as a cover for his work. The site is currently residential (not open to the public), but an informational plaque has been placed at the entrance of the back door corridor for visitors to learn about the related historical facts.

On April 4, 2014, the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government reviewed and designated the Former Site of the Central Committee’s Secret Printing House as a Shanghai Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Unit (Hu Fu Fa [2014] No. 29).
