In 1910, the Alarm Bell Tower of the Firefighting Federation was built in Xiaonanmen. The bell inside the tower was cast from pure copper, and its sound could be heard for miles when rung (currently, only the tower remains). A watchroom was built at the top of the tower, where watchmen stayed day and night. In case of disaster, the bell would ring to sound the alarm, prompting quick responses for rescue. At 12 noon on March 20, 1927, during the Shanghai workers' third armed uprising, the bell of the Alarm Bell Tower was used as the signal to begin the revolt. Currently, the Alarm Bell Tower is not open to the public.
