In February 1925, protesting the beating of a 12-year-old child laborer by a Japanese foreman, 40,000 Chinese workers held a successful strike. On May 15, a Japanese company tore up the agreement signed with workers during the “February Strike.” Gu Zhenghong, a Communist Party member who went to the factory to negotiate, was shot dead by the Japanese, which enraged the people of the city. On May 24, over ten thousand people from Shanghai’s working, student, and business communities attended the memorial service for martyr Gu Zhenghong. On May 28, the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party passed the resolution “On Expanding the Anti-Imperialist Movement and Organizing the ‘May 30th’ Mass Demonstration.” On May 30, imperialism orchestrated the shocking May 30th Tragedy. The anti-imperialist struggle of May 30th sent shockwaves across the country, sparking the massive nationwide May 30th Movement, which marked the beginning of the climax of the Great Revolution.
