Jiangnan Shipyard (Group) Co., Ltd. (Jiangnan Shipyard), with a 148-year history, originated from the Jiangnan Machinery Manufacturing Bureau founded in 1865. In June 2008, to support the construction of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo Park, Jiangnan Shipyard was relocated in its entirety to Changxing Island. The original site became the location for the corporate pavilions in the Puxi area of the 2010 Shanghai Expo.

On November 19, 2013, the first military industrial culture park in China's national defense science, technology, and industry system—the Industrial Heritage Site of the Jiangnan Machinery Manufacturing Bureau—was unveiled at the century-old site of the former Jiangnan Shipyard. The culture park will preserve and protect the original site and industrial remains, and create a distinctive military-themed cultural zone integrating exhibitions, cultural creativity, and more while maintaining the original appearance.

The former site of Jiangnan Shipyard covers an area of 800,000 square meters and includes nine Shanghai historical protection and retention buildings and structures such as the former site of the Translation Hall of the Jiangnan Machinery Manufacturing Bureau, Dry Dock No. 2, and aircraft hangars, along with walls and factory structures. Among them, Dry Dock No. 2 has been rated as an Outstanding Historical Building of Shanghai. These well-preserved and diverse military industrial sites bear witness to the changes of Jiangnan Shipyard across different historical periods and are important modern industrial heritage sites in Shanghai, holding value for both preservation and redevelopment.

On April 4, 2014, the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government designated and announced the Former Site of the Jiangnan Manufacturing Bureau as a Cultural Heritage Conservation Unit of Shanghai (Shanghai Government Document [2014] No. 29).
