Xiaobeihu Nature Reserve in Heilongjiang is a national nature reserve.

Xiaobeihu Nature Reserve in Heilongjiang is located in the middle section of the Zhangguangcai Mountain Range, with geographical coordinates between 128°33′07″–128°45′48″ east longitude and 44°03′16″–44°18′59″ north latitude. It stretches 28 kilometers from north to south and 17 kilometers from east to west, covering a total area of 20,834 hectares.

The reserve not only features large areas of pristine Korean pine virgin forests, Changbai larch virgin forests, mixed coniferous and broadleaf forests, and broadleaf forests, but also contains intermingled wetland ecosystems such as forested swamps, shrub swamps, and herbaceous swamps. These ecosystems exhibit high levels of primitiveness and representativeness, showcasing the typical characteristics of northern mountainous forest ecosystems.

The reserve boasts a rich diversity of plant species and complex, varied vegetation types. Its superior natural environment provides ideal conditions for the growth and reproduction of various flora and fauna. A total of 694 species of higher plants have been recorded here, including 78 species of bryophytes (from 29 families and 58 genera), 56 species of ferns (from 18 families and 32 genera), and 560 species of seed plants (from 87 families and 291 genera). Among these, eight plant species are under national second-class protection. The reserve is also home to 379 species of vertebrates, including 52 fish species (from 5 orders, 11 families), 11 amphibian species (from 2 orders, 6 families), 12 reptile species (from 3 orders, 4 families), 255 bird species (from 17 orders, 50 families), and 49 mammal species (from 6 orders, 15 families). In addition, there are 379 insect species (from 12 orders, 98 families), and 311 species of macrofungi (from 2 subdivisions, 9 orders, 35 families). The reserve hosts eight species of national first-class protected animals and 43 species of national second-class protected animals, especially rare species such as the scaly-sided merganser, which are found in concentrated populations here. As a result, the reserve serves as an important breeding and habitat ground for numerous rare animal species.

The reserve features a rich variety of ecosystem types and unique habitats. Forests, shrubs, meadows, swamps, and ponds are interspersed throughout, creating a complex and diverse forest landscape. The abundant biodiversity, distinctive volcanic rock landforms, and the area’s role as a high-productivity, high-quality genetic resource base make this reserve an important “genetic gene bank” for species. It is also an ideal site for scientific research and educational fieldwork on forest ecosystems, holding significant research value and scientific importance.
