The Shijia Hutong Museum serves as a base for patriotic education.

Shijia Hutong was first built during the Yuan Dynasty and is one of the oldest hutongs in Beijing. The Shijia Hutong Museum is located at No. 24, Shijia Hutong, Chaoyangmen Subdistrict, covering an area of 1,000 square meters. As the first hutong museum in Beijing, the Shijia Hutong Museum itself is a well-preserved two-courtyard quadrangle. The predecessor of the hutong museum was the former residence of renowned Republic of China literati Chen Xiying and Ling Shuhua, and also the site of a cultural salon in early Republican-era Beijing. After the reform and opening-up, Chen and Ling’s daughter, Chen Xiaoying, donated the courtyard at No. 24 to the Chaoyangmen Subdistrict Office.

The Shijia Hutong Museum began preparations in 2010 and was rebuilt without altering the original architectural layout. The newly completed museum consists of eight exhibition halls and one multifunctional hall. The themes of the exhibition halls include Shijia History, Cradle of the National Theatre, Modern Education, Era Memories, Notable Figures of the Hutong, Nostalgic Life, New Look of the Century, and Essence of Ancient Charm. The multifunctional hall is mainly used for cultural salons, book readings, and educational-cultural activities organized by community residents.

Since its opening in October 2013, it has been open to the public free of charge by appointment. During this period, it has received over 10,000 visitors from home and abroad, including leaders at all levels and experts and scholars, and has been featured in more than 30 reports by central and local news media, rapidly increasing its visibility. In May 2014, it was named a Patriotic Education Base in Dongcheng District.
