The Wujiazi Site

The Wujiazi Site is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The Wujiazi Site is located near Wujiazi Village in Shanhe Subdistrict, Shuangyang District, Changchun City, Jilin Province. It is a complex of multi-site remains from the Bronze Age, dating back approximately 3,000 years to the Eastern Zhou period of the Central Plains dynasties. It was discovered in 1980. The site comprises nine parts: Beishan, Yujiajie, Fox Immortal Hall, Xishan, Yangjuandingzi, and others. The remains include stone coffin burials, house foundations, ash pits, and ash ditches. Covering a total area of over 380,000 square meters, the site has yielded abundant pottery fragments and stone tools, belonging to the Xituanshan Culture.

The well-preserved house foundations and rich unearthed artifacts provide important historical data for studying the distribution of the Xituanshan Culture in the Changchun area. Furthermore, they offer significant scientific basis for research on the human development and ecological changes in the Changchun region.

The most concentrated cluster of tombs within the site group is located at Yangjuandingzi in Shanhe Subdistrict, Shuangyang District. Therefore, this tomb cluster is referred to as the Yangjuandingzi Tomb Cluster. It is situated northwest of Yangjuan Village, with the Yatai Cement Plant to its south. The tombs are built on a sunny, gently sloping hillside. On the surface, one can collect plain, sandy, reddish-brown pottery fragments. Based on the collected relics and the construction style of the stone coffin tombs, it can be determined that this tomb cluster is a Bronze Age burial site exhibiting characteristics of the "Xituanshan Culture" type. The tomb occupants lived during a period spanning the Shang and Zhou dynasties, the Spring and Autumn period, and the Warring States period in the Central Plains of China.

Since 1980, cultural relic archaeologists have discovered large-scale ancient sites and stone coffin burials here. The remains are distributed across relatively independent areas, with the richest concentrations found on the slopes of Beishan, Yujiajie, Fox Immortal Hall, and Xishan, covering a total area of over 200,000 square meters. Abundant pottery fragments and stone tools can be collected from the surface of the sites. The pottery is all sandy reddish-brown pottery mixed with clay, with rough texture, uneven firing, no surface decoration, and handmade. Identifiable vessel types include tripods, li cooking vessels, dou stemmed bowls, jars, pots, bowls, and spinning whorls. Stone tools mainly consist of axes, chisels, spinning whorls, net sinkers, arrowheads, and double-edged stone knives. Most of the stone tools are ground, with a small number being chipped.

In 2005, due to the construction of the Changyan Railway, the Jilin Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology and the Changchun Cultural Relics Protection Research Institute jointly conducted emergency archaeological excavations at the Wujiazi Site in Shuangyang District, Changchun City. They uncovered five house foundations, three ash pits, two ash ditches, and unearthed a number of stone and pottery artifacts. The stone tools were made by grinding or a combination of grinding and polishing, along with some carving. Typical items include stone axes and perforated stone knives. The pottery was fired at relatively low temperatures.

In 1981, the Wujiazi Site was listed as part of the second batch of Provincial-Level Cultural Relics Protection Units. In May 2013, it was designated as part of the seventh batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units by the State Council.
