Shifu Square in Shenyang

Shifu Square in Shenyang is located at the intersection of Shifu Avenue, Hui Gong Street, Qingnian Street, Xiao Xi Road, and Beijing Street in Shenhe District. Originally an open space, a station for the jointly operated Sino-Japanese horse-drawn tramway was established here in 1907. After the construction of the Beijing–Fengtian Railway, a new Beijing–Fengtian Station was built here in 1911, giving rise to a station-front square, which the Japanese called the “Central Plaza.”

After the liberation, the People’s Government of Shenyang Municipality was located on the west side of the square, hence the name Shifu (Government) Square. As the central plaza in the city’s core area, Shenyang’s municipal government square has become a source of pride for local citizens and a popular attraction for visitors, reflecting the city's culture and character. Currently, the square serves a dual function as both a civic plaza and a public green space for leisure. During the day, it teems with visitors, where people can experience the unique charm and atmosphere of Shenyang. When night falls, around 20,000 to 30,000 residents come here to relax, exercise, and enjoy entertainment. The current Shifu Square consists of three main sections: the Flag-Raising Plaza, the Sunbird Plaza, and the South Plaza.
