Huaiyuan Gate

Huaiyuan Gate is located at the western end of Shenyang Road within the Fangcheng area, commonly known as the Great West Gate. It was first built in 1631 and stands as an important symbol of the old city wall of Shenyang. In April 1634, Huang Taiji renamed Shenyang to "Shengjing, the Favored Capital" and personally decreed the naming of the eight city gates. The one to the south of the west side was named Huaiyuan Gate. The gate was demolished in 1930. In 1994, the Shenhe District government expanded its original site, restored its former structure, and rebuilt Huaiyuan Gate. In the past, it served as the gateway to the inner city, a necessary passage for Qing officials, and an important military defensive structure.
