Gexian Island

Gexian Island is located in the sea area approximately 5.2 kilometers northeast of Guanglu Island in Changhai County, Dalian City, and belongs to Guanglu Township of Changhai County. The island was historically known as Hexian Island. Its name originates from a mythological legend: “He” is the counterpart of “Ha,” which evolved into “Ge,” leading to its current name. The Ming Dynasty’s *Liaodong Zhi · Mountains and Rivers* referred to it as Geteng Island.

The island stretches from east to west, measuring 3.35 kilometers in length and 0.38 kilometers in width. It is composed of quartzite and slate. The terrain is wider in the east and narrower in the west, resembling the shape of a shark. The land is generally flat, with an elevation of 67.8 meters. There are very few bays or tidal flats along the coast; the southern shore features an alluvial sand belt. On the western side, the tide flows northeast during high tide and southwest during low tide, with a current speed of 1–1.5 knots. Approximately 1.85 kilometers to the southeast lies a shallow area with a depth of 4.4 meters. To the southwest, there is a reef ridge extending about 0.74 kilometers to the south.

The island has a population of over 800 residents, primarily engaged in fishing. In addition to producing fish and shrimp, it also yields sea cucumbers and oysters, with its specialty being silver needle fish.
