Longwan Mountain City

Longwan Mountain City is a cultural heritage site protected by Liaoning Province.

In May 2009, a mountain city ruin was discovered on a hill where Xilongwan Primary School is located in Xilongwan Village, Kaoshan Town, Kaiyuan City. The mountain city is built on a ridge extending from the east-west trending mountain range on the north bank of the Chai River. The city wall is made of earth and roughly forms an irregular rectangle, with a perimeter of over 570 meters. Cultural relics mainly include pottery, porcelain, stone tools, roof tiles, and tube tile fragments. Through research and analysis of these cultural relics, it has been determined that the mountain city was initially built during the Goguryeo period. Before the Goguryeo city was constructed, this area had been a Bronze Age settlement, and it continued to be used after the Liao and Jin dynasties. Two Goguryeo-period residential sites have been found in Houjingzi in the northwest of the mountain city and in Houhegou North in the north, where a large number of roof tiles, pottery, iron arrowheads, and other cultural relics were discovered. The layout of both the mountain city and the surrounding flatland settlements appears to form an integrated design for both peacetime living and wartime defense.
