Saline smoke is a unique weather phenomenon in Penghu. Naming the shop “Saline Smoke” reflects the nostalgia of the people of Penghu for their hometown. If you are a loyal reader of Shadows, you may recall that a few months ago we introduced Saline Smoke Penghu Seafood Stir-Fry Restaurant. At that time, the seafood congee at the shop was very popular, and now this hearty, ingredient-packed seafood congee can also be enjoyed in northern Kaohsiung. The shop has opened a new seafood congee specialty store to satisfy all those who love this dish.

The new branch is located on Chongde Road in the Hanshin Dome shopping district, a bustling hub filled with eateries. It’s just a few minutes' walk from the MRT station. Unlike other seafood congee shops, this one uses real white rice to simmer the congee—not the watery rice soup you might find elsewhere.

The shop is about the size of a typical eatery, with a simple yet cozy dining area. In the back, there are self-service utensils and condiments.

The shop's relatives in Penghu specialize in catching seafood, which is delivered fresh to Kaohsiung every day. This gives them an edge in ingredient freshness—allowing us to enjoy such delicious seafood.

Ordering is self-service: select your items and then place your order at the counter.

Century egg and blood clam – NT$50

The shop’s signature century egg with blood clam is a unique dish. Blood clams are one of Penghu’s famous specialties, found in the intertidal zone of rocky shores. Crushed century egg is mixed with the clams and seasoned to create this distinctive cold appetizer.

Golden pickled vegetables – NT$35

This serving of pickled vegetables has a stronger flavor—whether you like it or not is a matter of personal taste.

Traditional pork bone and salted congee – NT$120

The broth for the salty congee is made by simmering milkfish bones, chicken bones, and clams, then adding uncooked rice to create a richly flavored congee. The seafood ingredients come directly from Penghu, ensuring unbeatable freshness.

This big bowl of salty congee is perfect for sharing, so you can try several different flavors.

Signature seafood congee – NT$120

The shop’s signature seafood congee includes several fresh oysters, four shrimp, squid, scallops, fish balls, and more.

Combining the umami of fish bones, chicken bones, and clams, this seafood congee delivers an exquisite oceanic richness that melts in your mouth—the freshness of the ingredients is impeccable.

Penghu squid noodles – NT$120

A whole squid from Penghu, very generous. The broth has a subtle garlic-infused aroma and delicate flavor, best savored slowly like a gentle beauty.

The hand-pulled noodles from Penghu are firm in texture, not mushy, with a faint hint of saltiness.

Garlic clams – NT$80

As long as the clams are fresh, they’re delicious no matter how you cook them. The clam broth at the bottom of the plate is incredibly savory, with added garlic fragrance for a double treat.

Penghu squid balls – NT$50 / 3 pieces

These squid balls contain actual squid bits—they’re genuine, bouncy, and definitely worth a try.

Taro balls – NT$40 / 2 pieces

These are classic taro balls with a crispy outer layer from light frying and a soft, mushy taro filling inside. Shadow really likes this little snack.

Country-style black tea – NT$15 / cup

This country-style black tea is made with regular black tea plus unique plants from Penghu, giving it a special sweet undertone.

From street stalls to sit-down eateries, Kaohsiung offers a countless array of seafood congee, but most are merely seafood-flavored rice soup—not truly congee simmered from white rice. The arrival of this shop is undoubtedly a blessing for anyone who truly wants to enjoy congee. Their seafood, sourced from Penghu, is genuine and top-notch in quality. Next time you’re in the area, don’t miss out on a bowl of this rich, savory congee bursting with the flavors of the sea.
