Travel by high-speed rail to Miaoli: Seven Must-Visit Unique Venues

In response to the opening of Miaoli High-Speed Rail Station,the Miaoli County Government has launched a brochure titled “Travel to Miaoli by High-Speed Rail: Seven Unique Venues,” introducing seven distinctive venues in the county,and to enhance public transportation connectivity from Miaoli HSR Station,has compiled transport information from the station to the seven venues.Visitors to Miaoli are encouraged to take advantage of these convenient travel options.

1. Hakka Roundhouse
▪ Adjacent to Miaoli HSR Station, the Houlong Hakka Roundhouse features a uniquely designed round architectural form that not only highlights the Hakka cultural identity of Miaoli but also integrates the scenic beauty of the Beishi Stream restoration project — namely, its lovely waterfront promenade. It serves as a striking gateway to Miaoli, showcasing refined local arts and culture. The surrounding area includes scenic waterfront walkways perfect for strolling, and the night view is particularly breathtaking, making it a new eye-catching landmark in Miaoli.

2. Hakka Courtyard & Tung Blossom Park
▪ Originally intended as a park management office, the Hakka Courtyard within Tung Blossom Park gradually evolved into a structure co-conceived by traditional craftsmen and modern architects — the Hakka Courtyard. Built entirely in the style of traditional Hakka architecture with meticulous attention to detail, the building displays exhibits ranging from Hakka wedding customs and farming life to household items and literary works, all reflecting the Hakka people’s values of diligence, frugality, and simplicity.

3. Miaoli Specialty Hall
▪ Originally a military repair depot, the Miaoli Specialty Hall was redesigned with Hakka elements to serve as a visitor experience zone. In 2013 (the 102nd year of the Republic of China), it was renamed “Miaoli Specialty Hall.” Located in Gongguan Township, it houses the Miaoli Ceramics Museum, Square Kiln, Miaoli Kiln, Charcoal Kiln, and exhibition areas for citronella oil, bitter tea oil, and camphor oil. It serves as a cluster of venues dedicated to displaying Miaoli’s ceramic heritage and traditional industries, providing comprehensive services related to local culture, traditional industry, specialties, and sightseeing leisure.

4. Yingcai Academy (Southern Fujian Academy)
Located within the Houlong High-Speed Rail Special Zone, the Minnan Academy—later renamed the Yingcai Academy—is a newly opened attraction in 2015. Its exterior incorporates architectural styles and cultural customs of southern Fujian, adhering to the principles of historical preservation and creativity. Inside, it features creatively designed literary landscapes with ponds and bridges, creating a new leisure destination.

5. Atayal Cultural Museum
To actively preserve and promote Atayal culture, Miaoli County Government has specially established the "Atayal Indigenous Cultural Industry Zone." The park combines tourism resources from Tai’an Hot Spring area with Atayal culture, featuring a cultural museum, parking lot, and hot spring experience area. In addition to static exhibits, there is also an outdoor hot spring experience zone, weekend cultural performances, and a street vendor area, allowing visitors to enjoy indigenous song and dance as well as tribal cuisine, thereby preserving Atayal traditional culture.

6. Saisiyat Folklore Cultural Museum
The Saisiyat people are a minority among Taiwan’s indigenous groups, making cultural preservation challenging. Therefore, Miaoli County Government has set up the Saisiyat Cultural Museum to help pass on their heritage. The museum houses many Saisiyat bamboo crafts, ramie textiles, indigenous artworks, as well as fishing and farming tools used by the tribe. It also explains the procedures of Saisiyat rituals. It serves not only as a place for outsiders to learn about the Saisiyat but also as a center dedicated to preserving their culture.

7. Urban Planning Exhibition Hall
This Urban Planning Exhibition Hall was renovated from the former site of the county council. It showcases the distinctive culture, local specialties, and scenery of Miaoli County’s 18 townships. Features such as a 360-degree circular theater and projection interactive zones make full use of high-tech audiovisual effects, attracting attention and highlighting Miaoli’s cultural and creative charm. In addition to selling cultural and creative goods, the hall regularly hosts themed exhibitions and various hands-on workshops.
