Thailand’s annual major event, the Loy Krathong Festival, falls on the 15th day of the 12th lunar month in the Thai calendar. In 2015, it was held on November 25. Although it was a weekday, as a significant Thai festival, locals and tourists alike enjoyed this romantic and heartwarming celebration under the beautiful full moon. Throughout the country, in cities and villages, by lakeshores, water edges, and park ponds, crowds gathered with candles and lanterns to celebrate, making it a perfect destination for visitors.

This time, we’re introducingNagaraphirom Park, located opposite the Reclining Buddha Hall by Bangkok’s Chao Phraya River,where the lantern-releasing activity took place. Before releasing the krathongs, it’s common to see people light incense and candles, close their eyes slightly, silently pray or murmur wishes for their family’s safety and health, or confess their wrongdoings, hoping the water deities will help carry away illness or misfortune.

Krathongs float slowly along the water, carrying everyone’s wishes downstream, while couples by the river are filled with sweetness. The Loy Krathong Festival is also known as Thailand’s Valentine’s Day. Locals joke that if a man doesn’t take his girlfriend to the Loy Krathong Festival, it could spark a family revolution. Along the way, many foreign tourists can also be seen making a pilgrimage, buying krathongs on the street to release them and pray for smooth and happy love lives.

The romantic fireworks launched at the start of the event can add extra warmth to couples’ relationships. The colorful boat parade of lights crisscrossing the river is definitely worth experiencing and appreciating during this warm, sweet, and blessed festival – Thailand’s one-of-a-kind Loy Krathong Festival.
