9-second real-time landing footage test: Kaohsiung Science and Technology Museum’s 5th-floor mega slide — you won’t be able to hold back your scream

Kaohsiung Science and Technology Museum has recently unveiled Asia’s tallest slide. This three-dimensional spiral slide stands 18 meters high and stretches 46 meters long, making it the tallest of its kind in Asia. Sliding down from the height of a 5-story building, it takes an average of 12 seconds to reach the ground — as fast as just 9 seconds. It’s also a rare “adults-only” slide, with a height requirement of over 125 cm to enter.

Asia’s tallest slide reaches an average speed of 67 km/h. While general estimates suggest it takes about 12 seconds to slide down from a 5-story height, our reporter’s actual calculation, factoring in gravitational acceleration, shows it can be as quick as just 9 seconds. The slide is covered with transparent acrylic, so riders can see the space outside during the ride. Although it’s not as enclosed as typical slides, the speed is so fast that it’s hard to even tell how many loops you’ve made.

The museum states that the bottom of the slide is made of stainless steel, while the cover is transparent acrylic. Visitors first take an elevator to the 4th floor, where the slide begins. They then put on friction-increasing, heat-resistant leg covers before hugging their chests and descending at speeds of up to 67 km/h. This allows riders to experience four physics principles: free fall, friction, centrifugal force, and centripetal force. The high speed is so thrilling that it’s almost impossible not to let out a loud scream.
