Dubbed Asia’s largest, the “Tainan Jurassic Park” dinosaur exhibition grandly opened on the 18th. As Taiwan’s only large-scale outdoor exhibition, the interactive dinosaur models shipped from Sichuan, China, can move and roar, so lifelike they scared some children to tears. But the very next day, many kids noticed the dinosaurs seemed to be people in costumes—they started touching, patting, and squeezing them, making the “dinosaurs” too scared to move forward. Exhausted, they cried out “It’s too hot inside!” and even went on a mini strike.

The 2,000-ping outdoor dinosaur exhibition saw huge crowds queuing up endlessly on its second day, with everyone eager to see the fake dinosaurs.The largest one, a T-Rex about 10 meters tall and costing 1 million NT dollars, can move its head and roar, scaring children into screaming and backing away.However, compared to the previous day, fewer people were frightened, as many kids realized some dinosaurs were actually people in costume, while others only moved when electrified.

“The dinosaur moves, its eyes blink, and you can even feel its lungs breathing—like deep breaths—as it moves… It’s really cool!” The vivid giant dinosaurs are a hit with kids, but the 2-meter-tall human-operated interactive dinosaurs, once they appear, are immediately swarmed by children who touch and pinch them all over, leaving the costumes full of marks. The performers, exhausted, are reluctant to move forward, crying out “It’s really, really hot inside!! Oh—” and “My shoulders are so sore.”

The interactive dinosaur suits weigh up to 20 kilograms, and the staff wearing them can only last about 30 minutes at a time. When tired, they sometimes go on a little strike, with two suits left resting together in the break area.Many visitors said they thought the dinosaurs would just stand still in the park, but were surprised when some suddenly moved and made sounds as they walked by, often getting a good scare. “It felt so real!”Some even joked, “This is basically a leggy dragon!”

However, the crowd also seems to have exceeded the organizers’ expectations. Seeing so many people, the operators are concerned that some energetic children, upon seeing the dinosaurs, will keep touching and patting them. If this continues, the dinosaurs might start losing paint pretty soon.
