A 16-year-old Taiwanese girl, Chou Tzu-yu, was innocently caught up in a pro-independence controversy, and her distressed apology video sparked a global campaign by netizens to support Tzu-yu. To show their support,a Japanese hot pot restaurant in Taipei launched a “Free Hot Pot for ‘Yuqi’” promotion from the 18th to the 20th. Anyone whose name sounds like Tzu-yu and presents their ID can enjoy a complimentary personal meat set meal,creating quite a buzz.

Chou Tzu-yu, a girl from Tainan and a member of the South Korean girl group TWICE, was accused of being a Taiwan independence supporter by Huang An after she waved the Taiwanese flag on a TV show. Her agency JYP asked her to film an apology video to defuse the situation, but instead of calming things down, the video drew even more criticism globally. Netizens on Facebook and Twitter launched the #StandByYu campaign to show their support for her.
