This Baekbu-jip One-Pot Chicken near Jonggak Station was recommended by Miao when we planned to see the Cheonggyecheon Lantern Festival. The temperature that day was really low—it was quite cold—but we braved the chilly wind to get to this spot. Baekbu-jip One-Pot Chicken is extremely popular; even though there was a line, everyone was willing to wait. However, there’s an upside to the wait here—the restaurant is located in a rather unique, alley-like space that feels almost like a fire escape, enclosed on all sides. So basically, you’re not out in the wind while waiting.

The entrance to Baekbu-jip One-Pot Chicken is tiny—you have to walk in through a small doorway.

Business is booming—we arrived when the place was nearly full, and before long, there was a long line forming behind us. Everyone had come in out of the cold just to have some one-pot chicken.

Our camera had been outside in the freezing cold, and it took quite a while to warm up once we got inside... We ended up ordering just one pot of chicken for 18,000 KRW, and later added knife-cut noodles for 2,000 KRW.

When the one-pot chicken first arrived, it looked quite mild in flavor.

On the table, there were only simple side dishes like kimchi and sauces—this particular sauce deserves a special mention. I personally think this sauce is the star of the show here. Many customers kept dipping and then asking for more, and so did I. The owner is very generous with refills, giving you a big spoonful that coats all the chicken, rice cakes, and potatoes in rich sauce that really boosts the flavor. The sauce looks bright red but isn’t actually spicy. It has a slightly tangy, salty taste with a hint of garlic. It’s probably just regular chili paste mixed with other seasonings. In terms of spiciness, it’s not as hot as it looks—maybe just mildly spicy. I found it had a unique and enjoyable flavor.

The broth is light and savory, like a clear chicken soup. On its own, the one-pot chicken is pretty mild in flavor. I thought the texture of the rice cakes after cooking was still a bit chewy, which was nice.

The kimchi at Baekbu-jip is a bit more aged compared to that at Gongneung One-Pot Chicken—I personally prefer the one at Gongneung. In the end, we added knife-cut noodles to the pot, and remember to mix in more kimchi for extra flavor. That said, I thought the knife-cut noodles were just okay—maybe one-pot chicken is best paired with congee after all. But thanks to its special sauce, Baekbu-jip One-Pot Chicken stands out quite a bit. Compared to Grandma Chen Yuhwa’s version, I’d definitely recommend this one. But if we’re talking about Gongneung One-Pot Chicken in Sinchon, I actually lean toward that one more (though the only downside is that the rice cakes there are a bit too soft).
