"Matsu Blue Tears: 'Tear-Chasing SOP Notes' – 3 Steps to a Magical Drift in Beihai Tunnel"

Starting April 1, Nangan in Matsu will launch a "Nighttime Blue Tears Tour in Beihai Tunnel," where visitors can take a small boat and row gently through the light-pollution-free tunnel, gliding across the water to see shimmering blue lights. This activity has been highly popular since its launch in 2015. However, it is reported that many people"only booked the tour but not their flights," leaving operators waiting in vain.Therefore, the Matsu Blue Tears fan page has specially shareda "Tear-Chasing SOP"to remind everyone of the proper procedure—best to arrange transportation and accommodation before booking the tour, to avoid letdowns on both sides.

The "Nangan Beihai Tunnel Nighttime Blue Tears Tour" event, organized by the Matsu National Scenic Area Administration, will run from April 1 to October 31 this year.It is reported that many want to join the nighttime rowing tour this year, but many only booked the tour without booking flights. To prevent operators from waiting in vain outside the tunnel,the Lienchiang County Government Tourism Bureau shared the Tear-Chasing SOP on the "Matsu Blue Tears" Facebook fan page, reminding visitors"not to rush to sign up"and to first confirm transportation and lodging.

Step 1: Confirm Transportation and Book Tickets

The first step is to confirm flight or ferry tickets with "Uni Air" or the "Taiwan-Matsu Star." The fan page also kindly shares transportation tips, noting that Matsu consists of "four townships and five islands," including Nangan Township, Beigan Township, Dongyin Township, and Juguang Township (which includes Dongyü Island and Xiyü Island). There are two local airports: Nangan and Beigan, with flight durations of about 50–60 minutes each. It is especially important to notethat many people mistakenly think "Makung Airport" is in Matsu—if you accidentally book a ticket there, you’ll end up in Penghu instead.Recently, some even mistook "Beihai Tunnel" for "Hokkaido" and almost bought a ticket to Japan.

Besides flights, you can also take the dedicated ferry to Matsu, the "Taiwan-Matsu Star," which stops at Dongyin and Nangan islands with an approximately 8 to 9-hour voyage. Inter-island ferries between Nangan, Beigan, Juguang, and others run frequently—you can buy tickets just 20 minutes before departure—so getting to Matsu is not as hard as it seems, and is actually quite easy.(For inter-island ferry schedules and fares, click here to check)

Step 2: Confirm Accommodation

The second step is to confirm accommodation. You can visit the "Taiwan Accommodation Network" website to search for and book rooms. The Matsu Blue Tears fan page states that if you don’t want to arrange transportation and lodging yourself, you can also leave it all to three major travel agencies: EasyJet, Lion Travel, and Southeast Travel.

Step 3: Reserve the Tour

Once transportation and accommodation are sorted, the third step is to reserve the guided tour with the operator. The "Nighttime Rowing Blue Tears Tour" hosted by the Matsu National Scenic Area Administration takes place inside Beihai Tunnel in Nangan and is managed by Tie Ren Leisure & Entertainment Co., which is now accepting bookings.The available period is from April 1 to October 31, from 18:00 to 21:00 each evening.Bookings are made in sessions every half hour, with a total of 6 sessions, each accommodating 48 people per session. The boat ride lasts approximately 20 minutes.

The Matsu National Scenic Area Administration revealed that this year there are many more sessions than last year. After multiple tests, they found the probability of seeing blue tears is extremely high—over 90% of visitors can see them. Safety measures have also been carefully managed and further enhanced to ensure visitors have a worthwhile trip. The Matsu Blue Tears fan page also reminds everyone, “No matter which guided tour you join, ‘staying safe’ is the most important thing!”
