A 50-year legacy of Yunlin’s nostalgic frozen treats – sandwich ice, fruit sherbet ice

Left Douliu at noon when the weather was a bit muggy, so we decided to head to Huwei for some ice cream and also stop by the Xinglong Towel Factory we visited two years ago to pick up some souvenirs. On the way from Douliu to Huwei, there’s a cat-painted community – these kinds of spots have become quite common in recent years, so it’s worth a quick look~

This 50-year-old ice shop has an old, historic vibe. They serve ice cream, sherbet ice, popsicles, and ice cakes. Just tell the lady owner what you want – don’t help yourself. The sherbet ice reminded me of my elementary school days over 20 years ago. I always thought you hardly see shops like this anymore. There’s even a signed photo of Sawagami Tsuyoshi posted by the counter, which always makes me think of that little joke “just got up.”

We got the peanut-flavored sandwich ice cake. These days, there are still places that make these by hand, mostly in central and southern Taiwan. I just recently bought some ice cakes at the Yimin Food Tourist Factory in Taoyuan and really liked them. This shop uses Fuyixuan biscuits for their ice cakes – they’re thicker and have a milky aroma. When you first bite into the middle where the ice is, it’s a bit hard… but after letting it sit for a while, it becomes much easier to bite into. It’s Q (chewy), soft, and solid, and the faint peanut flavor is pretty nice too.

The rooftop cats in Dingxi Community actually attract quite a few visitors on weekends. People come to sit, rest, and chat. There are also some stalls around the area. It’s not a big space, just a little relaxation spot in a small village – perfect for girls to take selfies with the cat paintings. It’s really cute. (Lots more photos below)
