On October 30, 2009, the naming and award ceremony for the Eight New Sights of Shanghai was held at Yu Garden. This selection was the result of votes from both experts and the public among over 300 candidate sites. The top eight are: 1. Morning Bell at the Bund 2. Elegance of Yu Garden 3. Skyline Panorama 4. Renewed Charm of Old Alleys 5. Neon Lights of the Ten-Li Strip 6. Greenery of Sheshan 7. Painting Hunt in Fengjing 8. Scenic Ring of Dian Lake. These can be considered the basics, capturing the most fundamental impressions of Shanghai.

The dazzling Bund is known as the “Exhibition Hall of World Architecture,” featuring a row of modern and contemporary buildings along the riverside promenade that showcase a miniature history of Shanghai’s development—thus taking the top spot. Across the river in Pudong stand the Oriental Pearl Tower, Jinmao Tower, and the Shanghai International Convention Center. The modern skyline represents a new classic of Shanghai’s modernity, and its bustling scenery has also been ranked third. Spacious and lush Yu Garden features pavilions and towers arranged in an artful layout, offering a comprehensive view of the essence of Jiangnan-style gardens. The residences reflect the simple and crisp aesthetics of Ming Dynasty literati, with landscape art reshaping nature and furnishings exuding an elegant charm of over four hundred years—making Yu Garden the second on the list of Shanghai’s classic impressions.
