Where to go on weekends? If you live in northern Taiwan, there’s a new spot to check out starting this week. The “2010 Gold Festival in the Mines,” hosted by the Taipei County Gold Museum, offers not only hands-on metal craft DIYs and various performances but also centers around the theme “Golden Times • Reliving the Past – Ruifang Old-Time General Store Special Exhibition.” It aims to revive many cherished childhood memories. The exhibition runs from June 25 (Friday) to August 29.

In the past, when transportation wasn’t as developed as it is today and convenience stores weren’t yet ubiquitous, the old-time general store was the most important supply hub in the community. It offered all kinds of daily necessities — food, drinks, toys for kids, tobacco and alcohol for adults, cosmetics for women, and more. It was also a great place to connect and bond with others, essentially serving as a friendly neighborhood hub that combined the roles of a convenience store, supermarket, post office, and rest stop along the road.

For this special exhibition, the Gold Museum has specially invited Jiufen Local History Museum, deeply rooted in regional cultural and historical work, to co-curate the event. On display will be wooden pinball machines that haven’t been seen for over 60 years, a series of metal toys from the past, as well as eco-friendly DIY toys such as darts made from cigarette boxes, vividly crafted dragons woven from grass rope and wire, and sailboats made from aluminum cans. The toy section will also feature creatively restored retro playthings — definitely worth exploring.
