In addition to homework and travel, the highly anticipated Taiwan High-Speed Rail (THSR) camp for students will make a comeback this long winter break. THSR will launch a two-day, one-night winter camp during the 2013 winter vacation, divided into four sessions for elementary, junior high, senior high, and university students. Activities include visiting the maintenance base and control center, as well as entering a driver’s cab simulator to experience the thrill of speeding along on a high-speed train. Each session will accept 30 primary applicants and 10 alternates. Registration is open from December 10 to 17 on the THSR official website.

THSR stated that the 2013 camp offers participants the chance to learn about train maintenance, operations, and scheduling through hands-on visits to the usually off-limits maintenance base and control center, along with practical insights shared by THSR maintenance, operations, and service staff. Participants can also experience what it's like to drive a high-speed train via a realistic driver’s cab simulator. In addition, THSR has invited several renowned railway experts to share their knowledge about high-speed rail and railways, allowing participants to explore the wonders of rail culture both through activities and personal enrichment. Furthermore, elementary and junior high participants will visit the “Watercock Ecological Education Park” in Guantian District, Tainan City, to observe up close the habitat of the watercock, a second-class protected migratory bird, and catch a glimpse of the rare sight of these "water fairies" gliding across the ponds.
The 2013 THSR Winter Camp for elementary students is scheduled for January 22–23, junior high for January 24–25, senior high/vocational school for January 29–30, and university students for February 5–6. Online registration begins December 10, with computerized lottery draws taking place on December 18, and the announcement of accepted and alternate applicants on the THSR website on December 19.
