The “Taipei’s Most HIGH New Year’s Eve – 2013 Countdown Gala” is going to be different this year! Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-pin said that the highlights of this year’s countdown gala include the biggest-name lineup, the most design-driven energy, the largest global audience of Chinese viewers, and the greatest emphasis on environmental sustainability. The countdown gala will be hosted by hostesses Dee Shu (Hou Pei-chen) and the Comedy Duo Hei Jiao Xiang Qi (Hei & Jiao), and will feature performances by A-Mei, Aaron Kwok, Jolin Tsai, Harlem Yu, Shin, and A-Lin. Together, they promise a concert-scale performance akin to a show at Taipei Arena — the most spectacular and exciting lineup yet.

In addition to an all-star cast, this year’s countdown also specially features outstanding talents and groups from various fields taking the stage to spread the power of dreams to people across the nation. These include children with Down syndrome overcoming congenital challenges to deliver a remarkable opening performance, blind pianist Huang Yu-hsiang — recipient of the Golden Horse Award for “Outstanding Taiwanese Film Worker of the Year,” 15 high school students whose song “Kite” garnered 470,000 views online, the champion of women’s tug-of-war in Taiwan — the Jingmei Girls High School Tug-of-War Team, and the “League of Legends Season 2 World Championship” winners — Taipei Assassins. Together, they will perform “Kite” on stage to encourage everyone to pursue their dreams and welcome 2013 with aspirations. Another highlight of this year’s countdown is the introduction of an environmentally conscious message through the “New Fashion Movement for Countdown – Trash Diver Exercises,” which encourages participants to pick up (and reduce) trash while celebrating in Taipei, showcasing the civic responsibility of the attendees.
The Taipei City Government’s Department of Information and Tourism stated that the annual New Year’s Eve celebration at Citizen Square, combined with the countdown fireworks show at Taipei 101, has become one of the most anticipated events of the year for people across Taiwan and a major focus of international media coverage. CNN has even recommended Taipei as one of the “Top 10 Unique New Year’s Eve Cities Around the World.” In addition to TV broadcasts, this year’s countdown gala will also be streamed live on YouTube and Sina Weibo in Beijing, making it the most widely viewed New Year’s Eve event among Chinese-speaking audiences.
