The Alpine Route, which connects the Tateyama Mountain Range and Kurobe Gorge, runs along the main ridge of the Chūbu-Sangaku National Park between Toyama and Nagano prefectures. With its series of 3,000-meter-class peaks, it forms the roof of Japan’s Northern Alps and is an international-level mountain sightseeing route, attracting at least 10 million visitors a year.
Among them, the most popular Snow Valley is the road section from Murodō to Tengudaira, which opens only in spring each year. Due to heavy snow cover in the high mountains lasting more than four months, the Alpine Route is only operational for three seasons a year. When the mountain roads reopen in spring, snowplows are used to clear the Alpine Route, leaving behind snow walls as high as 15 meters along the roadsides. The section between Tengudaira and Murodō Plateau is open to visitors during the opening period, offering the unique experience of walking through icy snow walls – an unforgettable and magical encounter.
