And Xie Residence, located in the old market, is just like this city—not just an accommodation space in an old house, but every detail reveals the daily life and stories of the Xie family’s past.

Tainan Xie Residence is situated right within the declining Dacai Market. Walking into the old market, Western-style clothing shops, fabric stores, and traditional snack shops continue their daily routines as always. It’s a timeless space that preserves the memories of the old market and also a starting point for experiencing the life and essence of local Tainan residents. The homeowner, Xie Xiaowu, restored the old house by preserving most of its original structure, aged window frames, furniture, and more, while also incorporating the green building concept of energy conservation and environmental protection. For each floor and main space of the old house, at least three models were made. Once you climb up60the steep stairs, you’ll find thoughtful design touches throughout each level. On the second floor, there’s a raised loft filled with books, offering a cozy spot for reading. It also serves as a living room, and you can still see the old sewing machine once used by the previous owner’s mother tucked quietly in the corner—it still works to this day. The third floor is an open-air terrace, perfect for enjoying the cool air and the beauty of the sky. As for the fourth floor, it’s a large dormitory-style sleeping area for guests, featuring tatami mats crafted by master artisans. Not only do they give off the natural fragrance of straw mats, but they also provide a comfortable sleep without sore backs.
