Many Taiwanese travelers specifically seek out Tsukiji Market when visiting Tokyo, but this legendary site will cease operations by the end of 2016.

Originally set up in 1935 in Chuo Ward by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, Tsukiji Fish Market became a top attraction for many Taiwanese visitors thanks to its abundant selection of fresh seafood. Now, in preparation for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the Tokyo government has announced that the market will be relocated from Chuo Ward to Koto Ward and renamed “Toyosu Market.” The original Tsukiji Market will officially become history.

The relocation is currently scheduled to take place between November 3–6, 2016, with operations officially commencing on November 7. After 81 years, Tsukiji Market will officially close. Wholesale vendors dealing in seafood, produce, and other goods will move to Toyosu Market during this period and reopen there.
