As travel becomes more popular, many tourists have made it a habit to buy souvenirs when going abroad. For instance, in Japan, everything from cute snacks and cosmetics to home appliances such as microwave ovens and vacuum cleaners are hot items that travelers often purchase. However, be extra cautious when shopping – the Taipei Customs Office under the Ministry of Finance’s Customs Administration reiterated on the 2nd that all inbound travelers should be aware of the NT$20,000 duty-free allowance per person for goods brought into the country.If the value exceeds NT$20,000 or if the goods are not within the duty-free range and are taxable, travelers should declare them voluntarily. Failure to declare and being caught may result in the customs seizing the goods or imposing fines according to the law.

The Ministry of Finance’s Customs Administration stated that inbound travelers should take note:The duty-free allowance per person is capped at NT$20,000, and the duty-free goods brought back are only allowed for personal or household use.If the goods are for commercial use or resale, the NT$20,000 duty-free benefit does not apply. Those who gamble on not declaring and are found to have brought back goods worth more than NT$20,000 will be subject to confiscation or fines by customs under the Customs Anti-Smuggling Act or related regulations.

Additionally, for travelers bringing back 3C products such as iPhones from overseas,apart from the NT$20,000 duty-free threshold, there is also a maximum limit of five units. If more than five units are brought in, an “Import License for Telecom-Controlled RF Devices” issued by the National Communications Commission must be providedin order to import them.
