Inspired by the 311 earthquake in Japan, Japanese animation master Hayao Miyazaki will build a children’s park called “Forest of the Returning Wind” on Okinawa’s Kume Island, where kids can freely play in the forest and experience the beauty of nature. It is expected to be completed in 2018.

The lush greenery of Kume Island, with its verdant environment and crystal blue waters, is truly captivating. Master Miyazaki has invested 300 million yen to create a children’s park on about 10,000 square meters of land on the island. Existing playground equipment will be removed, and only a two-story accommodation facility, which can host around 30 parent-child groups, will be set up in the park. The goal is to allow children to climb trees and play freely in a completely natural environment, experiencing the warmth of the southern soil and the beauty of nature. Construction on Forest of the Returning Wind is set to officially begin in April 2016, with completion expected in 2018. After completion, the park will be donated for use by the local town.

Although there are currently no plans to feature any Studio Ghibli-related characters or works in the park, the announcement has still generated much anticipation.
