The number of passengers at Taoyuan Airport has risen sharply. According to statistics, the total number of inbound and outbound travelers in 2015 will exceed 40 million, far surpassing the current capacity. The third terminal, which Taoyuan Airport plans to build, is not expected to be completed until 2020, and will not be able to alleviate current demand for the time being. Therefore, Taoyuan Airport plans to build a smaller fourth terminal as an emergency solution, which could be completed as early as 2018.

The first and second terminals at Taoyuan Airport have an annual capacity of 32 million passengers, but in 2014 the airport already handled over 35 million passengers, and this year the number is expected to exceed 40 million. Many passengers have experienced long queues during immigration and customs, citing overcrowding. According to Taoyuan Airport estimates, based on the current annual passenger growth rate of 10%, the number is expected to reach 50 million by 2020. Therefore, expansion and construction are imperative.

The third terminal, with an annual passenger capacity of 45 million, is expected to be completed and put into use in 2020.Therefore, Taoyuan Airport has decided to build a smaller, smart terminal (the fourth terminal) for the time being.This terminal will adopt a self-service check-in system, fully computerized to reduce waiting times and labor costs. Lighting and air conditioning will also adjust automatically based on passenger volume. It is expected to officially open in July or August 2018, with direct access to the Airport MRT’s A12 station underground, offering great convenience.
