The Lunar New Year is coming. Do you have a lot of unused red envelopes at home? (Especially those with campaign candidate names or given by companies...) Don’t throw them away—they’re too nice for that. Turn them into lanterns instead.
The method is super simple, even moms with no crafting skills can master it in seconds. Older kids can join in too. Come and try your hand at making these little lanterns.

You’ll need six red envelopes, a stapler (or double-sided tape), a shape hole punch, and fairy lights for inside the lantern (you can reuse lights from old lanterns if you have any, but it’s not necessary if you don’t).

First, fold it vertically in half, then unfold.

Next, fold it horizontally in half, then unfold.

Then, align the middle of both sides and fold along the center line (black dashed line), then unfold. You’ll need to make five identical red envelopes.

Use a shape hole punch to make holes—it looks nicer, and if you’ve added fairy lights, the patterns will shine through.

Punch holes in all five red envelopes.
Align along the fold lines, then staple them together. If you’re worried about the staples hurting your child’s hands, use double-sided tape or regular tape instead.
After assembling the top half, put together the bottom half. If the fold lines aren’t very clear, you can fold them again as you go.
Insert the fairy lights, then staple the final red envelope in place.
Take one red envelope.
Lay it horizontally, fold it in half, then in half again.
And there you have it—your handle is done.
