Nakagusuku Shrine stands atop a cliff, offering a high vantage point with sweeping views of Naha Port. Built during the Ryukyu Kingdom era, it is the highest-ranking shrine among the Eight Shrines of Ryukyu. Since the Ryukyu period, people have visited to pray for maritime safety and bountiful fishing. It is considered a spiritual site that brings peace and protection to Okinawa. Here you can also see stone lion guardians of Okinawa, as well as a sacred tree. The serene atmosphere throughout the shrine grounds is truly immersive. Nearby, you’ll find Okinawa’s oldest existing temple, Gokoku-ji, which is also worth a visit.
