The story follows Maggie (played by Greta Gerwig), a New York girl who, after a series of failed relationships, decides to get pregnant through a friend’s sperm donation—but falls in love with a married writer, John (played by Ethan Hawke), just as she’s preparing to go DIY. John shows up to confess his feelings just as Maggie is about to inseminate herself！After a passionate night together, John dumps his successful but neurotic wife, Georgina (played by Julianne Moore), and marries Maggie on the spot.

After their daughter is born, John becomes consumed with writing and the romantic spark between him and Maggie fades. That’s when Maggie realizes that John and Georgina are truly meant for each other, and hatches a plan to “return” him—convincing Georgina to join her in a love-swap scheme...
