Popular tourist spot Baxian Settlement in the middle of the water announces temporary closure

For years, Baxian Settlement in Jinshan, a hidden gem nestled in the mountains of northern Taiwan, has been a dream destination for travelers. The stunning “Middle of the Water” area has been particularly popular among visitors. However, as more tourists and photographers flocked to the area and shared their experiences online, the growing foot traffic began to take a toll on the local ecosystem and residents, resulting in damaged farmland and crops. The disturbances became unbearable for the locals. In April 2016, some landowners started charging entry fees, a move that was met with resistance and further complications among residents. On November 12, 2016, Baxian Settlement announced it would temporarily close its doors to the public. Residents signed a petition to collectively resist outside visitors.

Located alongside Yangjin Highway in Yangmingshan National Park in Jinshan, New Taipei City, Baxian Settlement preserves one of the most extensive terraced field landscapes and traditional stone irrigation channels rarely seen in northern Taiwan. With high groundwater levels, crystal-clear water quality, rich biodiversity, abundant mountain stream water flow, and year-round mist, plus nearby hot spring sources, aquatic plants, and dense green moss resembling a carpet, the terraced fields, rich cultural elements, and ecological features of Baxian Settlement have become unique local assets.

The resulting backlash from residents and the controversy over entry fees have not only robbed visitors of a beautiful sight but also represent a loss for both residents and tourists, leaving many travelers feeling regretful.
