It’s the season of the golden rain tree, with golden showers falling across Taiwan, kicking off the annual mid-summer flower-viewing spectacle that has captured the nation’s enthusiasm. But besides golden rain trees and daylilies among the golden-hued blooms, it’s also the season for sun hemp flowers. Unlike the drooping golden flower spikes of the golden rain tree, sun hemp flowers grow upright in clusters, resembling miniature hollyhocks. Often seen in fallow fields in the Huatung Valley, the following photos were taken around Minquan East Road and Zhongzheng South Road in Ruisui Township, Hualien. Commonly intercropped, these sun hemp plants are relatively short, but in pure sun hemp flower fields, they can grow taller than a person. These mesmerizing golden flower seas also offer the value of green manure crops and can only be seen during fallow periods.
