Hualien’s New Landmark: Adorable Zodiac-Themed Landscape and Park

The Hualien City Government has developed zodiac-themed landscapes and parks as a new city attraction. So far, seven have been completed, including the Mickey Mouse Fort, Zebra Park, Sheep Path, Piggy Luck Park, Poodle Street Corner Installation, Crooked Tube Monkey Street Art, and the newly finished pair of white rabbits. These charming zodiac animals are placed throughout Hualien, drawing crowds for photos and adding a delightful touch to the city’s streets.

Starting in 2014, Hualien City has been planning and building zodiac-themed landscapes and parks, aiming to create a comic-book style city filled with childlike fun and humor. Seven of the zodiac installations have been completed so far: the “Mickey Mouse Fort” on Meishan, the “Zebra Park” at the intersection of Lin Sen Road and Ren Ai Street, the “Sheep Path” behind Mingyi Elementary School, the “Piggy Luck Park” at the intersection of Qiuer 2nd Road and Hua Min Street, the “Poodle Street Corner Installation” on the overpass near Ciji Hospital, the monkey-themed street art “Crooked Tube Monkey” from the Year of the Monkey, and the newly installed white rabbit art on Jinghua Street. One rabbit sits properly while the other lounges with its legs crossed, both facing the bustling crowd. The words “WE LOVE HUALIEN” are written on the rabbits, and their cute design has captured much attention.

The remaining five zodiac installations also have their unique highlights. For example, “Captain Hook” will be placed on a boat at the intersection of Port Road and Jingmei Road by Hualien Harbor, and “Glory to the Citizens” will be set up in the corner lot opposite Hualien Veterans Home. The dragon totem, designed by cartoonist Ao Youxiang, carries two meanings: to honor the contributions of veterans to the land, and to inspire pride in Hualien. Other installations featuring the ox, snake, and rooster are also in the process of being designed and will be completed soon.
