Walk across this glass bridge to Zhangjiajie – thrill-seekers can even try the world’s highest bungee jump

The glass bridge of Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon in Hunan is set to open to the public soon. On the 25th, the scenic area once again invited members of the public to take turns smashing the bridge’s glass panels with a sledgehammer and even drove a car across to demonstrate its safety. It has been reported that the bridge will soon feature the world’s highest bungee jump and the world’s steepest zip line.

The Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge, named “Cloud Sky Crossing,” is 430 meters long and 6 meters wide, with the deck approximately 300 meters above the valley floor, and has a maximum capacity of 800 visitors. The entire bridge deck is made of glass, allowing visitors to gaze down into the seemingly bottomless canyon beneath their feet.

On the 25th, the scenic area conducted a load-bearing safety test. More than 20 people took turns smashing the glass panels with a sledgehammer, and a car weighing over two tons was driven across the bridge. Although some of the glass cracked, the structure remained completely safe. In fact, the scenic area had previously invited a BBC reporter to conduct a similar test to help alleviate public concerns about the bridge’s safety.

“Cloud Sky Crossing” took a total of nine years from project initiation to concept design, and finally to completion. According to China News Service, the bridge’s designer, Haim Dotan, is Israeli and had previously designed the Israeli Pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai Expo. For this bridge, he designed the handrails in a wave shape so that as visitors walk, they continually change direction, effectively counteracting the resonance that could occur if everyone walked at the same pace. Additionally, 70 glass spheres are placed along the bridge at varying positions to disrupt walkers’ steps and help suppress vibrations.

The scenic area stated that the glass bridge will be opened to the public at an appropriate time. It has been reported that to attract tourists, the bridge will also feature the world’s highest bungee jump and the world’s steepest zip line.
