According to the Hotel Price IndexTM, abbreviated as HPITM, the report indicates that after three years of steady growth, global accommodation prices increased by 2% in 2017. With the proliferation of virtual currencies, the red carpet black tide dominating social discussions, and a gradual improvement in political sentiment, the overall travel environment has undergone significant changes. The global hotel price index rose by 2%, reaching an HPI score of 116, approaching the peak of 118 in 2007. Except for North America, all other regions saw growth, indicating a strong upward trend in the tourism industry.

According to statistics from the Tourism Bureau in 2018*，due to factors such as the shrinking domestic tourism market, the rise of low-cost carriers, and the depreciation of neighboring country currencies, Taiwanese spent as much as NT$564 billion on overseas travel in the first three quarters of 2017, nearly double the amount spent on domestic tourism. Additionally, it was found that last year’s most favored travel destinations for Taiwanese were mostly located in Asia, showing that nearby cities continue to hold strong appeal. Tokyo retained the top spot, while Paris was the only non-Asian city to make the list.
The top nine overseas travel destinations are all in Asia.
The survey also shows that Asian hotel prices offer the best value for Taiwanese travelers. Looking closely at the average nightly hotel rates paid by Taiwanese in the top ten overseas travel destinations, compared to 2016, the rates in Japanese cities such as Tokyo, Osaka, Okinawa, and Kyoto dropped by 7-8% due to the depreciation of the yen. In Hong Kong, Singapore, and Shanghai, the average nightly rates increased by only about 1-2%, while Bangkok and Paris saw slight increases of 3-4%. Among them, Bangkok offers the best value for money, with an average nightly rate of just NT$2,527.
Bangkok is the most cost-effective overseas travel destination for Taiwanese.

Island vacations are on the rise
This report also highlights Da Nang, known as the "Oriental Hawaii," which jumped 43 spots to become the top emerging travel destination. Located in central Vietnam, adjacent to the southern coast of China, and being Vietnam's fourth-largest city, Da Nang boasts 30 kilometers of beaches paired with sunny blue skies, offering a relaxing vacation atmosphere against a stunning seascape, with an average nightly rate for travelers of just NT$2,673. Furthermore, the hotel price index report also indicates that the average nightly hotel rate paid by Taiwanese travelers in Sabah, Malaysia, increased by 25% compared to the previous year, showing that Taiwanese are willing to pay more for island getaways.
