To enhance the convenience of traveling to the US, China Airlines will launch a new route to Ontario, California on the 20th. Reports suggest that after negotiations with the US side, China Airlines may break through diplomatic restrictions and implement “US Border Preclearance” measures on flights to the US, meaning passengers can undergo US customs inspections in Taiwan and proceed directly through immigration upon landing in the US—effectively entering the US while still in Taiwan.

Taiwan officially joined the US Visa Waiver Program in November 2011 and was included in the “Global Entry” program last year, enabling Taiwanese travelers to clear US customs quickly. Now, there is hope for the implementation of “US Preclearance,” where clearance procedures are completed in Taiwan. If successful, Taiwan would become the first case in the Asia-Pacific region, sparking widespread discussion among netizens.

However, the “US Preclearance” plan has also sparked much online discussion. Some have pointed out that after passing through “US Customs” at Taoyuan Airport, passengers are considered to have entered US territory, meaning they won’t pass through duty-free shops, and airlines won’t be able to sell duty-free goods, so passengers naturally can’t purchase them either. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also stated that various departments are still coordinating, and details and supporting measures are currently under discussion. Whether it will actually be implemented still needs to be evaluated.
