Entering the Taiwanese market as “Taiwan’s only free advertising postcard media,” CoolCARD (CoolCARD) has been placed in numerous bookstores, malls, cinemas, restaurants, and cafes since 1998, becoming a target for many postcard collectors to track and collect. After 20 years, CoolCARD announced on August 31 that it would end the placement of CoolCARD locations and retrieve CoolCARD information racks by the end of September.

The emergence of CoolCARD in Taiwan changed the perception of advertising flyers as disposable, and also cultivated a group of collectors who collect CoolCARD postcards. These collectors also exchange and trade with each other, giving CoolCARD more meaning and value beyond just advertising exposure.

In its Facebook announcement, CoolCARD mentioned that over the past 20 years, it has printed more than 10,000 designs and over 200 million postcards; in the wave of digitalization, CoolCARD was also one of the first to print QR codes on cards, and even developed the Cool App, allowing consumers to download hundreds of unique and stylish photo frames at will; its announcement also mentioned that digitalization and changes in media have put the exposure channels of print media to the test, leading to CoolCARD’s decision to cease operations.
In 2017, CoolCARD held a 20th-anniversary retrospective exhibition at a Taipei MRT station.
Many netizens expressed regret upon hearing the news, saying they had collected many CoolCARDs, with some noting that “movie-themed CoolCARDs are the hardest to collect.” For many, they represent “memories of youth.”

CoolCARD has announced that the last placement locations are mostly concentrated in Taipei, such as Broadway Café outlets, N.Y. Bagels New York Bagels, Showtime Cinemas... and other places. Although they are scheduled to be displayed until the end of September, they are expected to be claimed by collectors very soon.
