Book your flight before your hotel room – A major survey on Taiwanese travelers' travel planning behavior

The survey shows that Taiwanese travelers are placing increasing importance on the travel experience, spending an average of 33.3 hours planning each trip – 2.5 times longer than Hong Kong travelers. At the same time, over 70% of Taiwanese travelers tend to book flights before hotels, with 66% doing so to allow for more flexible itinerary planning. Regarding booking timing, travelers typically book flights 73 days and hotels 56 days before departure – a difference of nearly 20 days, indicating longer consideration time for hotel bookings.

The “2018 Taiwanese Travelers’ Travel Planning Behavior Survey Report” states that over 70% of Taiwanese travelers are primarily motivated to travel by “local unique attractions or experience-based itineraries.” When starting to plan a trip, they engage in “searching for flights/accommodation (83%),” “browsing reviews/introductions of tourist attractions (70%),” and “researching and booking local transportation methods (68%).”

Survey data shows that travelers generally spend the most time on “searching for and booking suitable flights or accommodation (20%),” “browsing travel-related forums or blogger articles (19%),” and “researching destination-specific special activities or features (18%).” On average, total pre-trip planning time amounts to 33.3 hours – 2.5 times the average planning time of Hong Kong travelers.
