To fulfill his dream of traveling, some people choose to quit their jobs. Five years ago, Dotan Negrin from the United States gave up his stable nine-to-five job, sold all his belongings to buy a van, and set off on a round-the-world trip with his beloved dog Brando and a piano worth about HK$6,000. Most street performance instruments are chosen for their portability, but he opted to push a 500-pound piano in pursuit of a unique musical dream.
Over the course of five years, he visited 21 countries and over 300 cities, performing in iconic spots like in front of the Eiffel Tower and on the Brooklyn Bridge, as well as on streets and alleys — as if every corner could be his stage. He’s jammed with others and played to packed audiences, and even once broke two fingers when the piano fell on him, but Dotan still enjoys it.
Driving that van, which serves as both his vehicle and home, he has occasionally met generous strangers who offered him comfortable lodging. Still on the road, it remains to be seen whether he’ll make it to Hong Kong.
