Under Lion Rock lies the memories of a generation of Hong Kong people, and so does the Cathay Pacific “Queen of the Skies” Boeing 747, which has served Hong Kong for over 37 years, officially retire tomorrow, October 1.
This “Queen of the Skies” could carry up to 400 passengers, ideal for long-haul routes, and was Cathay Pacific’s flagship aircraft, accompanying Hong Kong’s economic takeoff. Once glorious, at its peak, Cathay Pacific operated a total of 38 “Queens of the Skies”!

Among them, cabin service manager Tang Yanfen, who worked at Cathay Pacific for 30 years, recalled how the Boeing 747 was a symbol of luxury. It was the first to introduce rice cookers, allowing passengers to enjoy freshly cooked rice — a feature that drew crowds. Working as a flight attendant for Cathay Pacific was also a source of pride.
However, this Cathay Pacific “Queen of the Skies” Boeing 747, which has served for 37 years, will eventually retire, and her farewell flight will be CX543, departing from Tokyo Haneda Airport and returning to Hong Kong on October 1, with an expected landing time of 2:10 pm.
