Taiwan has a well-developed bicycle industry with a wide variety of cycling paths, many of which are worth recommending. Today, we’re introducing a classic route in Taichung – the Houfeng Bicycle Path.
The Houfeng Bicycle Path stretches 4.5 kilometers in total, passing through the former No. 9 Tunnel of the TRA Mountain Line and the Hualiang Steel Bridge. The scenery along the way is stunning, featuring both beautiful landscapes and rural views. The round-trip ride takes about one hour, making it a relaxing and leisurely experience suitable for solo relaxation, couples, friends, or family outings.
Among the highlights is the over 380-meter-long “Hualiang Steel Bridge.” This steel bridge was built during the Japanese colonial period, with its base made of brick piers and its piers adorned with a set of steel frames commonly known as “flower beams,” hence the name “Hualiang Steel Bridge.”
From the “Hualiang Steel Bridge,” you can enjoy distant views of the Dajia River, with even more breathtaking scenery during sunset.
In addition, the Houfeng No. 9 Tunnel is another uniquely charming spot. Built in 1908, this tunnel is 1.2 kilometers long and was originally part of the railway line on the TRA Mountain Route, boasting a history of over a century. Riding through this century-old tunnel, I couldn’t help but think, “It’s incredible that a place once traveled by trains is now a peaceful path for cyclists – what a rare experience.”
To experience the charm of cycling in Taiwan, the Houfeng Bicycle Path is undoubtedly a classic among the island’s cycling routes.
