Mom’s Travel Fun
Taichung not only has great weather and delicious food, but is also convenient for family outings—and more importantly, many trendy hotels have become must-visit and Instagram-worthy attractions, with super high cost-performance in accommodation. The old town area of Taichung has risen to prominence in recent years, with many design buildings and shops created from the renovation of old houses.
A while back, the editor mom was scrolling through Facebook when she happened to spot a photo of a hotel pop up in her feed. She was instantly captivated at first glance. She immediately Googled “1969 Blue Sky Hotel,” and relevant reports appeared. A well-known Japanese travel website, H.I.S., asked over 2,000 Japanese netizens to vote for their favorite Taiwanese food and attractions—and this hotel was the only Taiwanese one on the list!
The 1969 Blue Sky Hotel was formerly known as the Blue Sky Hotel. At its peak, it hosted famous entertainers such as Teresa Teng and Fei Fei when they performed in Taichung. The chairman renovated the hotel to give it new life, and even hired the designer behind the former Miyahara Eye Clinic to transform the space. The biggest highlight is the wall made of stacked vintage suitcases, each representing a traveler’s memory—letting unique retro elements pop up in every corner. Within less than half a year of opening, it was not only selected as an art highlight of Taichung City but also became a trendy hotel with a special cultural vibe.

1969 BLUE SKY HOTEL Taichung Blue Sky Hotel
Address: No. 38, Shifu Road, Central District, Taichung City 400
Phone: 04-2223-0577
This time, Mom isn’t driving the car anymore. We decided to take the train to Taichung Station. Not driving has one advantage — we can enjoy the scenery along the way.
After getting off the train, we walked from Taichung Station to Blue Sky Hotel. It took about 10 minutes, and along the way, we passed places that both young people and even foreign tourists love for photos and check-ins — the Gongyuan Eye Clinic and the Taichung Fourth Credit Cooperative. Even before reaching the hotel, we were already turning into Insta-beauties with all our photos and check-ins.

After turning onto Shifu Road, we saw this hotel full of "vintage" elements. Once we learned about the hotel’s story, we finally understood why it's called the 1969 Blue Sky Hotel.
It turns out that back in 1969, this place was a well-known grand hotel, where popular entertainers of the time such as Fong Fei-fei, Tsuei Tai-chin, and Kenny Ho would stay when performing in Taichung.

The exterior wall pillars are deliberately kept with a “weathered look.” Seeing them, don’t you feel a sense of déjà vu? Actually, this hotel’s design shares the same architect as the Gongyuan Eye Clinic and the Fourth Credit Cooperative.

Pushing open the main door, what unfolds before your eyes is a scene of incredible richness. Every corner and object here has so many details worth admiring slowly. The dazzling crystal chandelier hanging from the second floor, the traces left on the walls from removing the old staircase, and… even the counter made from an old boiler — my mom noticed it right away. Every detail here takes you back to the 1969 era.

The most eye-catching feature is the luggage wall, made up of 198 suitcases stacked from the first floor all the way to the top of the second. Each suitcase is part of the hotel owner’s collection, and every one is at least 50 years old.
My mom said: “There’s one similar to the red suitcase I used when I got married to your dad!” Hehe… So bringing mom here was definitely the right choice. This is their era, and they connect with it the most.

That’s exactly why the IG photo wall can’t be without this "thousand-year-old wall," right? You could take dozens of photos here!!
Then we took the retro elevator upstairs. The elevator is also designed in the same vintage style. Other than at the Lin Department Store, I think this might be the only place with it?!
This time, Mom’s special package offers two room types: double rooms and family rooms.
Since this time, Mom brought both her elders and little ones, she chose
As soon as you enter, you’re greeted by this huge floor-to-ceiling window, making the whole space feel very cozy.
The room is quite spacious. In addition to two double beds, there’s also some space sectioned off to create a small living area within the room.
These wooden floors make me just want to plop down and not move — seriously.
Did you spot the capsule coffee machine on the table? Every room comes with NESCAFÉ capsules. For someone like me who must have a cup of coffee every morning, that’s super important.
The industrial design has a touch of hipster flair. This wall in the room, I first thought was covered with wallpaper to mimic an antique effect, but actually... it’s a real red brick wall. It adds a unique charm to the guesthouse.
The room is carefully crafted with vintage-style furniture. A clothes rack made from water pipes, bicycle handlebars and seats turned into a bull head decoration on the full-length mirror. Each design detail, after renovation, gives new life to these old assets. Every corner of the room makes you want to keep taking photos, uploading, uploading, uploading...
About 7–8 square meters, with either two single beds or one double bed.
The double room is suitable for couples, newlyweds, or best friends to experience together.
Both room types are equipped with separate wet and dry shower facilities, offering both safety and comfort.
They also come with a smart toilet. I really admire Blue Sky Hotel’s attention to detail — even the toilets are given a retro design, featuring the so-called Taiwanese floral tiles (Majolica tiles), giving the bathrooms another retro fashion vibe. Even the toiletries use the design concept of a Kongming lock. Just amazing.
The 1969 Blue Sky Hotel becomes even more enchanting at night. On the second floor, there’s a Blue Sky Lounge. In an instant, it feels like stepping into a time tunnel. This publicly accessible lounge lets guests chat with friends, read magazines, and step inside is like passing through a time tunnel. The vintage jukebox plays nostalgic tunes, as if taking you back to the prosperous and glamorous 1969 era.
Speaking of this jukebox, it has quite a background. It was custom-made and shipped from the UK to Taiwan. All the songs inside are classic Western oldies, and guests can use it for free. If you want to listen to music, just ask the front desk for tokens.
Before you know it, it’s dinner time. When in Taichung, you don’t have to worry too much about food — there are so many great restaurants or night markets.
Since we didn’t drive this time, Mom had to take the bus to find food. I also realized during this trip to Taichung that the buses here are very convenient and really thoughtful. As long as you use an EasyCard or an iPass to ride a Taichung city bus, the first 10 kilometers are free.
Blue Sky Hotel is quite close to the bus stop. Just a 5-minute walk will get you to the Second Market. The buses come frequently, and if you see one going to National Taichung University of Science and Technology, that’ll take you to Yizhong Street Night Market. Alright, dinner is decided — Yizhong Street it is… (and the bus is free, hehe!)
Yizhong Street is located near Zhongyou Department Store, and the entire street is lined with numerous food stalls and eateries. The alleys also feature trendy and avant-garde fashion boutiques—fashion-forward youths definitely shouldn't miss Yizhong Night Market.

Our family enjoyed a super filling meal on bustling Yizhong Street, then slowly took the bus back to the hotel. Everyone collapsed into the warm beds as soon as we entered the room…
Early the next morning, our family checked in on the 3rd floor to enjoy the complimentary breakfast.
The restaurant features an industrial urban-style design with large floor-to-ceiling windows that let in plenty of light. I loved this bright and uncluttered dining space—the serving line was smooth and efficient, and the buffet breakfast offered a rich and delicious variety of both Chinese and Western dishes, with diverse and refined choices.
The thoughtful plating showed real care—there was so much that looked appealing it was hard to choose, and it instantly lifted your mood. Western-style breads, salads, and other vegetarian sides followed the "one-bite" concept, offering variety without being too filling. The hotel’s signature creative dishes had unique flavors you simply must try.
After such a hearty breakfast, I sincerely suggest that friends follow our example and take a relaxing trip through Taichung’s Old Town. This time, our family relied entirely on public transportation to get around.
I recommend traveling by bus—it's free for the first 10 kilometers. Or, for a healthier option, rent a Ubike. Don’t forget to ask the hotel front desk for the three-fold brochure of Taichung City’s bus sightseeing routes; the bus lines can take you all over the place.
Whether you’re biking, walking, or taking the bus, it’s healthy and money-saving.
I’ve compiled the following routes for everyone’s reference.
