Last updated 2026-11-08 — This dad felt that work had kept him too busy to be involved in his child’s life, so he finally quit his job and took his son on a 10,000-kilometer road trip. We can also check out some tips for traveling with kids by car.
2015 was the year I quit my job.
I used to work at a government-affiliated institution, often very busy, and didn’t spend much time with my child—most of the parenting was handled by my wife. Because of the nature of my job, I frequently had to entertain clients, and getting blackout drunk was common. Until one day, after yet another night of heavy drinking, I woke up, pulled back the curtains, the sunlight outside was blinding, and I felt physically drained. Suddenly, I decided that life probably shouldn’t go on like this.
Life only has so many days, the hands on the watch keep time flying by, but have I really been living each day with substance, have I truly touched each day with authenticity?
And so, I submitted my resignation, stayed home for a while. I paused, sorted out my thoughts, re-examined myself, and began to reconnect with my family and the relationships with each family member.
My son Dongdong had already started elementary school, and I hadn’t really had the chance to be involved much.
Dongdong loves hands-on activities, especially LEGO and robots, and he’s also into military themes and sports. This trait is probably inherited from me—I practiced martial arts since childhood and got into Renmin University thanks to my martial arts skills. I’ve always believed that sports are great for building character, such as perseverance, endurance, and open-mindedness. Dongdong does really well in this regard. He’s obsessed with LEGO, and for model kits with thousands of pieces, he can sort and assemble them all by himself in just two or three days, which often overwhelms me just watching. After starting robotics classes, he became even more dedicated, spending his days on various crafts—chain drives, right-angle drives, gear drives, linkages. Even my own scientific knowledge improved along with his.
